Gauntlett's Identity Theory

Gauntlet's Identity Theory The first part of the theory is that he likes often get a sense of their own identify from the media products that they consume. The second part of his theory is that he believes that in older media products... in the past what generally tends to happen was that they used to portray a very straight forward a very simple representations of identify in particular of gender. Which created very simple stereotypical representations of men that used to have to be strong, brave, they would have to go to work, and take care of their wives and their children in financial terms, with the idea of being strong, muscular, and tall. This was a very one-sided representation of men, in the same way that in the past representation of women tended to be on women being housewives, mothers, they tended to have to be very caring and emotional, they would often stay at home, as well as little independence. And that was the very simple st...

McLuhan's Concept in Context

Image
McLuhan's Concept in Context The audience is taking to the stage, thanks to the web millions of people can have their own say. Information is everywhere whether it be blogs, video's, websites, at wikis, which is very confusing. The web gets really interesting when people pool their ideas, when they start to be really creative. Because new ideas usually come through conversations, and the web is a mass of conversations. That is why its creating mass innovation. The 20th century = Mass production for mass consumption like factories, cars, televisions, and fridges. The 21st century = Mass innovation more ideas being shared by more people than ever before. The first signs of what is positive is... Wikipedia and Linux, Slashdot and oh my news, second life and world of Warcraft. Millions of people creating games, worlds, knowledge, information, software. Old gowning cooperation's are the wrong shape to do this.

Media Ecology Essay

Media Ecology Plan The phrase media ecology was officially introduced in 1968 by the media theorist  Neil postman . However, what inspired the phrase was Marshall McLuhan's theory proposed in his 1964 book, understanding media.  Media Ecology is the  aims to describe the ways in which diverse media environments shape today's society and everyday lives. And the central premise of the theory is that the communication content doesn't exert nearly as much influence as the medium of communication itself does. Postman, Nystrom, and Strate have defined media ecology in quite similar ways. They suggest that media, or rather, a medium is a technological context, the environment that consists of communication systems within which we live, and which shape our culture. Such as, that environment inevitably affects our perceptions, feelings, values, and beliefs.  Logan expanded upon the definition by suggesting that media ecology is also based on feedback that flows back and forth...

Netflix - keeping up with a changing media environment

Netflix - keeping up with a changing media environment "How are Netflix working on evolving to keep relevant and up to date with audience demands in the market today?" Netflix , marking its first big move beyond TV shows and films, is planning an expansion into video games and has hired a former  Electronic Arts  and  Facebook  executive to lead the effort. Mike Verdu will join Netflix as vice president of game development, reporting to Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters.  Verdu was previously Facebook’s vice president in charge of working with developers to bring games and other content to Oculus virtual-reality headsets. The idea is to offer video games on Netflix’s streaming platform within the next year.  The games will appear alongside current fare as a new programming genre, similar to what Netflix did with documentaries or stand-up specials.  The company doesn’t currently plan to charge extra for the content. Netflix shares gained as much as 2....

NZ streaming services Update

NZ streaming services Update At the turn of the millennium, the marketing company Blister Media was tasked with making something  “emotional and visceral”,  a short graphic that would define everything that the cable TV channel HBO stood for. It designed a five-second sequence that appears before every episode of every TV show HBO makes, something that has come to define the service. As its tagline says: “It’s not TV, it’s HBO.” Twenty-two years on, as the TV streaming landscape splinters, segregates and implodes, that mark of quality is more important than ever. And it seems HBO recognizes what it has on its hands. Now, in a move likely to put a major dent in at least one local streaming service, it’s finally planning on bringing its brand and content, in a meaningful and permanent way, to Aotearoa. It’s complicated, but hear me out. On Friday, the newly merged Warner Bros Discovery announced it would be combining its streaming services  –  that’s HBO Max and D...

media Ecology

Media ecology aims to describe ways in which diverse media environments shape today's society and our everyday lives. And the central premise of the theory is that the communication content doesn't exert nearly as much influence as the medium of communication itself does.  Origins: The phrase media ecology was officially introduced and coined in 1968 by the media theorist Neil postman. However, what initially inspired the phrase was Marshall McLuhan's theory proposed in his 1964 book, Understanding Media.  McLuhan was the first to suggest that the focus of the study should be media and not the content it communicates. Aside from McLuhan, today, the media economy theory recognizes various influences, which are rooted in sociology, history, education, and economy of the 20th century.  Over the years, many theorists have offered their definitions and views of media ecology. Aside from Postman, the most significant among them are Christine Nystrom, Lance Strate, and Robert Lo...

Change in Distribution Models

Change in Distribution Models Americans love going to the movies, but while box-office revenues have risen incrementally over the past few years (in 2013, receipts topped out at a record $10.9 billion), that’s solely due to rising ticket prices; attendance continues to plummet. This year, it’s estimated that only 1.24 billion tickets will be sold at American theaters, down from 1.34 billion last year, and 1.36 billion in 2012. VOD: VOD is the prime thorn in the side of movie theaters, which view on-demand as a means for distributors to bypass big screens altogether. While this has yet to involve any giant releases, small and mid-range films have increasingly proven that debuting on VOD shortly ahead of a theatrical release, or day-and-date on VOD and in theaters simultaneously, is a profitable strategy. This past summer, RADiUS-TWC released Bong Joon-ho’s futuristic action saga  Snowpiercer  on VOD only two weeks after it hit theaters, and as of October, the decision has paid ...

Media Regulation Theory

Media Regulation Theory Task 1 "How has technology development made media regulation harder?" The BBFC is the regulatory body that is responsible for setting the rules about what can and cant be in films. They are the ones that make the film certificates and assign those to different films, as well as they are the ones to ban a film if they do not conform to those rules. They think regulation of media is hard, first of all its hard to decide what rules there should and shouldn't be, lots of the rules that are in place now in different media industries about protecting audience from harm, there about stopping us from being offended, as well as traumatized. They put in these rules to protect us and in particular to protect children and young people, but those rules also affect adults as well which makes it very difficult because adults often fear that once they are over the age of 18 they should have choice, they should be able to watch what they want as well...

Social Media Regulation Question

Image
Social Media Regulation Question "Should social media companies and big tech have the right or the power to silence voices on their platforms?" Last week,  Twitter permanently suspended President Donald Trump's account,  and over the weekend quickly shut down the President's attempts to jump to alternate accounts including the official POTUS account. The president also faced a ban from social media giant Facebook.  On Monday, it was reported that Parler has sued Amazon Web Services and in a statement the company claimed, "AWS's decision to effectively terminate Parler's account is apparently motivated by political animus." Twitter's suspension of Trump, and the shuttering of Parler are just the latest issues that highlight the very deep divide plaguing our country and it is unlikely to change soon.  "Internet censorship is an incredibly divisive topic right now," said Claire Cole, creative partner at Gamblers Pick, which  recently condu...
