snapchat has created snap streaked which makes people go onto their phones more and social platform to do this snap every day, which gives them something that they do not want to lose especially if they have ben going for 152 days without stopping. many people when they go on holidays they tend to give passwords to their friends to carry on their streaks as it is very important to them more than anything else in the world... and this is how snapchat catches the people who use their platform, because there are about 150 million us children who use this as a normal way to communicate with friends.  different platforms have 100 people behind phones of audiences trying to find the patterns you use and try to get you to use their platform for a longer period of time  the way in which Facebook tries to hook you closer to your phone when feeling lonely instead of helping you connect with your friend and they way they do this is by making the people in the control room maximize the wa...

Media Regulation online is tricky

The software being developed would allow researchers to analyze and gain insight from datasets on a variety of different social media and other platforms without being able to directly view or access that data - providing privacy for the platforms' users. It means research about algorithms - which currently is typically limited to looking at data from one or two platforms - would now be able to examine and compare data across several companies without risking users' privacy. New Zealand and Microsoft are funding the initiative. Microsoft will also assist with testing the tool and Twitter will support its development. Development of the initiative is expected to take place over a nine-month period with a total cost of approximately US$1.5 million. Ardern said a better understanding of algorithms was needed.  "Companies, governments, civil society, we will all benefit from this initiative. It will help us create the free, open and secure internet we are all driving for....

Maori Representations in NZ

Task 1  Jean Teng speaks to New Zealand film-makers and funding bodies to assess how well we’re doing with “diversity and inclusion” in Aotearoa. A re we failing to support emerging filmmakers from minority communities, and can this summit act as a catalyst for change? The Power of Inclusion summit took place over two days at the Aotea Centre on 3-4 October. It was hosted by the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) and Women and Film in Television International, and supported by the Walt Disney Company and a range of other, smaller players. There were high-profile international guests, including keynote speakers Geena Davis and Yara Shahidi, and many local film-makers and producers. The summit’s stated intention was to “posit future action to create a more inclusive industry and world”. Annabelle Sheehan, the Film Commission’s chief executive, later said that care was taken to ensure the programme didn’t become an echo chamber. The presence of producers and decision-makers in h...

The Importance of Representation in Film and Media

Imagine the first time when young children see a superhero or an astronaut on screen whose image looks like them. For some kids, the moment of seeing  Black Panther  was their first time seeing a superhero of color on screen. Better yet, this groundbreaking film which has netted over $900 million dollars, could have been the first time seeing a predominantly black cast with a black director, black costume designers, black hairstylists, and more, actively producing representation in a positive light. The content our society views on screen is supposed to reflect its people, but all too often the entertainment and media industries tend to marginalize people of color, and women, just to name a few. Stories affect all areas of life in terms of how people view themselves, how they live their lives, and how they see others. Some of the content that these industries distribute to the public remains the only form of representation some individuals see, and these portrayals may be accu...

essay regulation.

Media regulation today is complex and becoming more and more difficult." To what extent do you agree with this question? Media is becoming more and more complex, which makes it difficult to regulate. With technological Advancements growing over the years it has opened the eyes of audiences and allowed them to watch media that can be perceived as harmful and disturbing to either a younger audiences or others watching. Technological convergence has allowed families to be under the same roof with iPhone, iPad, TVs, and laptops to consume media, instead of one form of technology the whole family watches on. Parents of a house hold would be gatekeepers of their family to regulate their child from watching over-rated shows and play games, but as the technology advances this means that parents have no control over what their child watches or when they watch it as, they would no longer need IDs when entering a DVD store to purchase or rent a movie, as they can just stream it on...

Algorithms, fake news, and social media.

Many people have argued that these platforms are bias against their point of view siding how the algorithms are engineered.  Facebook in particular is more likely to give users content matching their world views. Most platforms have an increase in the diversity of the information that you see when you use them. But for some of the platforms, particularly Facebook, they found that regardless of the information is more diverse it also shifts more towards the views that you might of already had.  All these platforms have different ways in which they show users and so Facebook is largely the most opaque of the platforms as it is based on content engagements such as likes, comments, shares.

Essay Plan (Media Regulation is complex)

"Media regulation today is complex and becoming more and more difficult." To what extent do you agree with this question? The media plays a huge part in how audiences perceive the world as it gives views that help audiences connect with the world. Through this connection, technological advancements have grown over the years, which helps audiences connect with each other. The media controls the stereotypes that are being fed into ideologies for audiences, which relates to hegemony as it perceives to the audiences of  the social, and cultural influence applied by a dominant group. Covid - 4.63 million New Zealanders had access to internet at the time of lockdown. Covid has prevented audiences to go out and watch movies in the cinemas, which has caused theatre attendance to go down, while allowing streaming services to increase. Because of covid the cinemas would show movies that are rated at a certain rating to protect audiences from being harmed and or disturbed, but now that ...

Social Media Regulation

Many Social Media platforms believe that audiences are getting information about the world from twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, instead of from news broadcasting platforms. YouTube have said "To help keep our communities safe, we haven't waited for regulation; we've created new technology, hired expert reviewers, worked with external specialists, and reviewed our policies to ensure they are fit for the evolving challenges online." Facebook have said " we have clear rules about what is and isn't allowed on our platforms and we are investing billions in safety. We look forward to carry on the discussion with government, parliament and the rest of the industry, as the process continues." These two Social Media platforms have said that they do not want any harmful information or posts on their platforms as it can be harming for others, which isn't good. They believe that they have put enough money and resources into preventing this harmful information ...

Media Ecology / Power in the media - Social Media politicized for BLM

Image
Social media platforms have served as great information for political engagement and social activism for  years , especially for the Black Americans. This was obvious in 2020, when  an unarmed Black man , George Floyd, was killed by a White Minneapolis police officer which resulted in  widespread protests  that demonstrated the reach and power of these platforms. From both  2016  and  2018 , the idea that although race-related hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter are consistent on platforms like Twitter. Spikes in the usage of these hashtags often correspond with current events. B lack social media users Although engaging in political behaviors and types of activism on media platforms is not limited to any one group, Black social media users are often more likely than their brothers and sisters from other racial and ethnic backgrounds to engage in different types of political activities on social media and to believe these activities are more effective....

Media impacting culture and culture impacting media

The Occupy protests, the Arab Spring, the mobilization of resistance against the Government of the Ukraine or in Hong Kong was heavily dependent on the resources provided by the social media. Many observers have concluded that in a networked world the social media possesses the potential to promote public participation, engagement and the process of democratizing public life. That the Internet and the social media are powerful instruments for mobilization of people is not in doubt. However, it is not its own technological imperative that allows the social media to play a prominent role in social protest.  The culture of everyday life has become entwined with the Internet. The flourishing of online dating offers a striking example of how the construction of significant relationships can draw on the resources provided by the social media. In many Western societies online dating has served as a provisional solution to the problems thrown up by a more individuated and segmented social ...

social media impacting our views on the world

For many, Facebook and Twitter’s bans were  long-awaited . But it’s not so cut and dry, as many others have  decried  these decisions as infringements on free speech. To be clear, the First Amendment only protects individuals’ speech from U.S. governmental oppression — there is nothing illegal about a private firm censoring people on its platform. After years of controversy over President Trump’s use of social media to share misleading content and inflame his millions of followers, social media giants Facebook and Twitter finally took a clear stand last week, banning Trump from their platforms — Facebook indefinitely, and Twitter permanently. even those who feel the bans were appropriate acknowledge that simply banning a single account is hardly an adequate solution to address the deep-rooted issues that led to the events of January 6. Twitter and Facebook have banned the former president of the united states, Donald trump. Because if they way they felt how he was be...

Gauntlett's Identity Theory

Gauntlet's Identity Theory The first part of the theory is that he likes often get a sense of their own identify from the media products that they consume. The second part of his theory is that he believes that in older media products... in the past what generally tends to happen was that they used to portray a very straight forward a very simple representations of identify in particular of gender. Which created very simple stereotypical representations of men that used to have to be strong, brave, they would have to go to work, and take care of their wives and their children in financial terms, with the idea of being strong, muscular, and tall. This was a very one-sided representation of men, in the same way that in the past representation of women tended to be on women being housewives, mothers, they tended to have to be very caring and emotional, they would often stay at home, as well as little independence. And that was the very simple st...

McLuhan's Concept in Context

Image
McLuhan's Concept in Context The audience is taking to the stage, thanks to the web millions of people can have their own say. Information is everywhere whether it be blogs, video's, websites, at wikis, which is very confusing. The web gets really interesting when people pool their ideas, when they start to be really creative. Because new ideas usually come through conversations, and the web is a mass of conversations. That is why its creating mass innovation. The 20th century = Mass production for mass consumption like factories, cars, televisions, and fridges. The 21st century = Mass innovation more ideas being shared by more people than ever before. The first signs of what is positive is... Wikipedia and Linux, Slashdot and oh my news, second life and world of Warcraft. Millions of people creating games, worlds, knowledge, information, software. Old gowning cooperation's are the wrong shape to do this.

Media Regulation Theory

Media Regulation Theory Task 1 "How has technology development made media regulation harder?" The BBFC is the regulatory body that is responsible for setting the rules about what can and cant be in films. They are the ones that make the film certificates and assign those to different films, as well as they are the ones to ban a film if they do not conform to those rules. They think regulation of media is hard, first of all its hard to decide what rules there should and shouldn't be, lots of the rules that are in place now in different media industries about protecting audience from harm, there about stopping us from being offended, as well as traumatized. They put in these rules to protect us and in particular to protect children and young people, but those rules also affect adults as well which makes it very difficult because adults often fear that once they are over the age of 18 they should have choice, they should be able to watch what they want as well...

Social Media Regulation Question

Image
Social Media Regulation Question "Should social media companies and big tech have the right or the power to silence voices on their platforms?" Last week,  Twitter permanently suspended President Donald Trump's account,  and over the weekend quickly shut down the President's attempts to jump to alternate accounts including the official POTUS account. The president also faced a ban from social media giant Facebook.  On Monday, it was reported that Parler has sued Amazon Web Services and in a statement the company claimed, "AWS's decision to effectively terminate Parler's account is apparently motivated by political animus." Twitter's suspension of Trump, and the shuttering of Parler are just the latest issues that highlight the very deep divide plaguing our country and it is unlikely to change soon.  "Internet censorship is an incredibly divisive topic right now," said Claire Cole, creative partner at Gamblers Pick, which  recently condu...
